The FMA Direct Co-Pilot™(PN CPD4) Flight Stabilization Unit (FSU) is a patented system that senses the difference in infrared signature between the earth and the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to provide 100% real time, day or night stabilization about two axes on any model.
Its action may be visualized as the equivalent of a string tautly stretched between the center of the earth and deep space on which the model is constantly held so that it can not turn downward unless commanded.
This new technology will revolutionize the training of R/C pilots for airplanes, helicopters, and gliders.
Every club and every RC hobby dealer will want one to increase the number of successful pilots and reduce the number who crash their ARF/RTF trainer, never to return to the hobby.
The sticks can be used normally to command the model through any maneuver it is capable of, yet,
the moment the sticks are centered, the model immediately rights itself, even from inverted flight.
Buddy boxes will no longer be needed as Co-Pilot has proven to be the most effective way possible to train new flyers and to assist all flyers.
The instructor no longer needs a transmitter. During prototype testing, persons who have never flown a model are becoming competent to fly complete flights, including unassisted landing within just as few flights.
The task of flight instruction is reduced to the simple, quiet reminder to the pilot, “center the sticks” when he makes an error that might normally crash the model. Landings are instructed by directing him to “line it up with the runway” then to “throttle back”.
Co-Pilot holds the wings and nose level and the model descends to land nearly automatically. In a helicopter equipped with Co-Pilot and with a gyro for tail rotor, one can lift into hover with collective pitch, then set the transmitter down until the fuel runs out and the helicopter will remain where it is as long as no wind is present to cause translation.
Even if there are strong winds present, Co-Pilot will keep a helicopter in level hover.
The Remote ON/OFF of the FSU is adjustable so that it can be set to make controls as stiff or as loose as you like. Thus, the helicopter can be made to respond just slightly to full stick until one is confident of control. The sailplane pilot can seek a thermal, set rudder for a circling, flat turn, and Co-Pilot will hold the wings and the nose level to keep it in the thermal.
The unit is small and light enough for use in slow/park flyers. Co-Pilot includes an interactive pre-flight setup process to check weather conditions and adjust the unit for optimum performance. The sensors may be located anywhere on the outside of the model where it can “see” the horizon in all directions, except in the exhaust stream where oil might deposit on the sensor windows.
The computer module mounts inside of the aircraft. The computer module and sensor unit must be interconnected using a 4-position flat ribbon cable. Co-Pilot ships with one 24 inch, flat ribbon interconnect cable and an 8 inch program push button to mount on the aircraft. The 24 inch cable is the perfect length for trainer type aircraft but there is also the option of a 40 inch cable.
